The West Africa Governance Risk Assessment – Identifying and Addressing Signs of Retrogression In Governance is designed to contribute evidence as well as take practical steps towards strengthening democratic governance in West Africa. The project will have three key initiatives –The Democracy Dialogues; The Next 30Years Pledge; and the development of a Democracy Risk Profiles. The first two initiatives will begin with an initial focus on Ghana. The third initiative will focus on the entire West-Africa region.

The Democracy Dialogue Series aims to bring key stakeholders in Ghana’s democracy space together to discuss and make recommendations on how to address the six identified challenges to the country’s democracy captured in the recently published book 5Presidents, 8Elections, 30Years Later: How Ghanaians See Their Democracy.

The recommendations from the dialogues will serve as the basis of work with Ghana’s political parties on the second initiative – The Next 30Years Democracy Pledge. Political parties play a critical role in framing governance issues, organizing and winning elections, and eventually forming governments to solve public problems. Ghana will have its ninth election after thirty years of uninterrupted democracy in 2024. As political parties frame the issues for the election it will be important to include commitments about how to improve and strengthen Ghana’s democracy in their respective election year party manifestos.

The third initiative, Democracy Risk Profiles will use data initially from the Afrobarometer survey to identify the unique as well as common signs of retrogression across the West-Africa region. The risk profiles will be a useful tool to help stakeholders develop interventions to address the identified signs of retrogression.
